2. The project

WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

By participating in the Frontier-Thailand Paid Teaching Programme, you'll be helping your students improve their level of English and bringing a fresh approach to teaching styles and lesson types.

Teaching is not just about transferring knowledge; it is about building confidence and trust and about forging friendships. Before long, you'll find that your students become like a family to you and you’ll enjoy attending local festivals or exploring Thailand’s spectacular countryside with them, or simply telling stories.

Your Paid Teaching Placement will take place at a relatively privilidged private school close to Singburi.  Unfortunately the less privilidged schools of the region cannot afford to employ short term paid staff and so rely upon voluntary teachers from other programmes.

Another problem facing the region is that highly skilled teachers tend to flock to Bangkok where the promise of a higher salary and a greater chance of finding employment are a strong lure.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

Your placement in Thailand starts with an orientation weekend in Bangkok in which you take a cycle and boat tour of the city, get your bearings and socialise with the other participants. This is followed by a two week training period in Singburi which includes teacher training and introductions to Thai culture, language, customs and the opportunity to go on excursions. You will meet students and nearby schools, as well as observing lessons with both Thai and foreign teachers. You will then have the opportunity to practise teaching with your peers and in the local schools before beginning the placement itself.

Once you have completed and passed the course you will be issued with a teaching certificate and you will be guaranteed a placement in a school, receiving a monthly stipend relative to the region, usually between US$525 and US$840, and teaching 20–30 hours per week. You will be making and executing your own lesson plans, and this will give you the perfect opportunity to experience real Thailand, make a difference to the future generations, immerse yourself in Thai culture and make friends for life with your welcoming hosts and the wonderful children.

3. What to expect

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

You'll fly into Bangkok on or before your placement start date and will be met by a local representative of Frontier-Thailand, after which you will be escorted to your accommodation for the first phase of your stay. You will be near Singburi, approximately 140 km north of Bangkok.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

Your accommodation during your two week training period will be in one of three eco-houses in Singburi. The rooms are twin shared and all the houses have Western style toilets, while one even has an Asian style toilet! You will have access to cool water showers, which you'll find refreshing in the heat of Thailand! There are communal areas for eating, relaxing and meeting your new friends and there is a local shop within walking distance of most of the houses should you feel the need for any additional treats!

Following your training period you will be responsible for covering the modest costs of your living expenses having started your paid placement. Accommodation will be arranged for you by the school you are placed in and some participants may even have the opportunity to live with a local host family – the ideal environment for the host and the guest to practise each other's language!

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

All food is included during your training period, and you will find it to be typically Thai fare. Thai is one of the world's most exciting cuisines, and if you're willing to experiment, you'll be richly rewarded. Contrary to popular belief, not all Thai food is fiery hot and there are plenty of tasty dishes suited to the Western palate. This hybrid cuisine has been influenced by soups and noodle dishes from China, curries from India and satays from Indonesia. Most dishes incorporate four elements, sweet, sour, salty and hot flavours, and many of the dishes are rice or noodle based.

Flights

Flights are not included in our trip costs. However, we have partnered with an experienced and professional team of travel experts to help our volunteers find the best flight deals for their trips with us. This travel specialist operates in the tailor-made, long haul multi-stop travel market, arranging complex airfares and transfers for independent travellers. They provide expertise, security and a vast product range along with a Travel Butler service which is a single point of contact and support whilst you are overseas.

We recommend that you obtain a quote using the following contact details rather than book online, as our partner will offer you the most competitive fares. To receive your quote or to seek any advice for your flights, please contact our dedicated team of travel experts on 0800 082 9994 (or +44 800 082 9994 outside the UK) or email frontier@flightcentre.co.uk .

Visas

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

Insurance

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.
