You and an elite group of adventurers will trek across some of the world’s most remote, wild, and spectacular locations on an incredibly challenging but highly rewarding journey. Under the guidance of one of our field experts you'll learn how to lead your own expedition, including camp craft, navigation, leadership, and field safety. Along the way, you'll pass through some of the most dramatic landscapes that the world has to offer, where animals never before seen and communities almost entirely cut off from the rest of the world live.

Nowhere else on earth will you see wildebeest, gazelle, zebra and antelope in such enormous numbers – and Tanzania's characteristic plains make spotting wildlife easy. Blessed with some of the world's largest game reserves, the country also has one of the highest concentrations of elephant, lion, buffalo, crocodile, hippo, and chimpanzee. Tanzania's dramatic geography, amazing wildlife, and tribal villages make this an ideal place to carve your own path on an exciting expedition.

WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

The Eastern Arc Mountains and Coastal Forests, taking up much of the eastern coast of Tanzania and stretching into Kenya, are considered to be one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots. These are areas with a high proportion of endemic species, but also at high risk from destructive practices, which make them priorities for world conservation. This hotspot is particularly important for its flora – it contains just 0.1% of tropical Africa's land area, but 13% of its vascular plants.

Due to its remoteness and the topography of the mountains in much of the Nguru South Forest Reserve, to date little scientific data has been collected on the biodiversity found in the reserve compared to that of other reserves in the Eastern Arcs such as the Ulugurus or Usambaras. This is also a reflection of the fact that international interest has only recently focused on the Eastern Arcs. Hence it is an exciting area in which to carry out our expedition management projects and there's a good chance that you can even discover new species!

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

You'll learn all the skills that you need to lead your own unforgettable expedition. These will include:

Pre-departure planning and preparation

  • Risk assessments
  • Personnel selection
  • Fundraising
  • Marketing
  • Budgeting
  • Health and safety awareness

Expedition skills

  • Navigation
  • Camp siting
  • Provision planning
  • Communications
  • Health and safety

Expedition leadership

  • Route-planning
  • Debriefing
  • Team communication
  • Decision-making
  • Problem-solving
  • Taking responsibility

Scientific survey work will involve studying a number of indicator species using standardised rapid biodiversity assessment methodologies. The details of the programme will be put together by the expedition scientist but typically will include elements from:

  • Vegetation surveying
  • Small mammal sampling
  • Amphibian sampling
  • Butterfly trapping
  • Bird-watching
  • Opportunistic observation of birds, reptiles and mammals

  WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

You will be welcomed by a Frontier representative in Dar es Salaam and will spend your first night there before setting off on your expedition. The group will then deploy to Turiani, where we will spend a couple of nights before travelling to Mskati village: our entry point into the forest reserve.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

You'll be camping in tents that you carry (along with anything else you need) on your back! You and your team mates will set up camp each night in a place of your choosing, ensuring that it's close to a water source and, if possible, with the best possible views! After you set up your tents, it's time to build a fire and get down to cooking your dinner of beans, rice, and vegetables, and whatever else you've brought.

Visas

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

Insurance

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to £2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to £1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.
