Join us on an unforgettable journey through bewitching East Africa. Experience the region’s drum-beat soul and marvel at its vast, breath-taking beauty. This trip of a lifetime combines exciting adventure travel with the chance to live among Maasai communities, to help local people, and to travel across some of the most beautiful parts of this incredible landscape. East Africa is an ancient, colourful, exciting and beautiful place, with so much to offer.

Keep your eyes peeled for Africa's iconic big game and marvel at the sight of Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest, most majestic mountain (climb it if you think you’re fit enough!). Live among the legendary Maasai people, and become part of their ancient, vibrant culture as you teach in a school or take part in a community project. Then finish off with some time out for a well deserved rest, lazing on Kenya’s paradise coast, swinging in a hammock on a white, sandy beach or swimming in the perfect azure waters of the Indian Ocean.

Take this incredible journey of discovery and fall in love with everything that Africa has to offer. Immerse yourself in its culture and feel at home amongst its colourful, welcoming people. Gaze at scenes of peaceful beauty as animals meander across a skyline lit up by an African sunset. Experience the thrill of adventure and discovery alongside lazy days in tranquil paradise.

What makes this journey extra special is that it is lead by a well-travelled guide who is young, friendly and fun, but also sensible and knowledgeable. Your guide will take care of all the stress and organisation on the trip, whether it be recovering lost luggage, arranging bus tickets, booking hostels or extra activities, dealing with emergencies or even knowing the best places to go for a great night out. If you want to experience the beauty and adventure of Africa, travelling hassle-free, along with a young and friendly group of companions, then joining this Frontier Adventure journey is the perfect solution.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

TANZANIA

Arusha/Moshi area (teaching and community):The adventure begins in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s most magnificent mountain, near to the towns of Moshi and Aruhsa. We will spend time exploring the region and living among the colourful Maasai tribesmen who farm the area’s vast and beautiful plains. You’ll have the opportunity to help the region’s people by teaching at a local school or getting involved with a community project.

Optional extras:This area of Tanzania has plenty of adventurous activities to offer if you want to experience even more. You might choose to climb the nearby active volcano, or even scale Kilimanjaro itself. Or you could take a safari in one of the nearby National Parks and get up close to some of Africa’s fabulous big game and exotic wildlife.

KENYA

Taveta:  After our stay near Moshi in Tanzania, we'll set off northeastwards on an exciting journey. The trip will take you through beautiful landscapes and tiny rural villages where we’ll be greeted by excited, exuberant children. The first day's travel takes us over the border to a spot near Taveta and the stunning Lake Jipe, which is resplendent with wildlife. Here we'll spend our couple of Kenyan nights.

Tsavo West:  Next we journey across the Tsavo West National Park. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife because this park is home to elephants, cheetah, rhino, giraffe, and zebra, to name just a few. The area is also filled with an array of spectacular birds, many of which are found nowhere else on earth. We will spend a night or two just east of the park, near a town called Maktau.

Voi:  We will spend a few days in this small, rural town, getting to know the local people and communities, and maybe helping out in an orphanage or a school, or with a community project. An important wildlife corridor is nearby, so there is plenty of possibility for wildife viewing trips as optional extras.

Mombassa:  Finally, after the adventure, thrills and breath-taking experiences of our journey, we’ll arrive at Kenya’s paradise coast, for peaceful days of relaxation on white, sandy beaches by the sparkling blue waters of the Indian Ocean. Finish your days swinging in a hammock gazing out across the ocean or sitting in a beach-front café with your newly found friends.

Optional extras (Kenyan coast):  If relaxing isn’t your thing, this area of coast has plenty of activities to offer. Go diving and search for whale sharks, visit a temple and learn about the region’s culture, or visit a nearby village and immerse yourself in the lives of local people.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

You will be greeted at Kilimanjaro International Airport by your trail leader and escorted by bus to a local hostel where you will spend your first night. If you are arriving before the project start date you will meet at an agreed rendezvous point.
You will spend a day in Moshi or Arusha to get a taste of a vibrant African town before heading to the Maasai village that will be your home for the next few days. From there you will soon set off to the next destination on your exciting adventure, so be prepared to throw yourself into the experience once you arrive!

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

During the trail you will stay in basic, but of course comfortable, accommodation such as village homestays, hostels, shared rooms or communal (mixed sex) dorm rooms.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

You will be provided with two meals a day. These will include a variety of local cuisine from markets and food stalls as well as food prepared by your local hosts and delights cooked up by you and your fellow trail members – so don’t forget your recipe book! By using local produce and learning traditional cooking techniques you will be provided with an authentic East African experience while supporting local economies.

ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

At each destination along the trail route there will be a range of activities for you to choose from, at extra cost. These could include climbing Mt Kilimanjaro or the active volcano Old Lengai, taking a safari into Arusha National Park, going horse-riding, taking Swahili lessons, scuba diving on the Kenyan coast, or perhaps kayaking or jet skiing, to name but a few! Take advantage of this unique opportunity to use your newly acquired knowledge to explore these activities at local rates rather than paying tour company prices. If all this wasn't enough, our guides are always happy to advise you on where you could travel next. Perhaps take a trip down the East African coast or hop over to the paradise spice islands of Zanzibar and Mafia.

Visas

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

Insurance

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to £2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to £1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.
