WHAT WILL I BE DOING?
You are not required to have any previous teaching experience to partake. You will be teaching children between the ages of 2-15 years and many will be orphans. The main subjects covered are English, mathematics, science and social studies. Your investment into the children's education will not only bring a smile to their faces, but will create a lasting constructive future for each child, their family and the society at large.
Some examples of the skills that you will develop during your time on the project include:
-
The ability to motivate students to learn
-
The ability to make critical observations
-
Improved communication skills and the ability to pass this skill on to others
-
Creativity, time management and organisational skills
-
Hands-on experience of teaching and training
Term times are roughly February 1st to April 30th, May 20th to August 30th, and September 15th to November 15th. However please be aware that these dates are always subject to last minute changes.
The sports coaching programme gives impoverished children from local villages the chance to learn and play sports, in a safe environment. This develops the children’s talents, not only teaching them valuable skills in teamwork and communication, but giving them a better chance for a successful future. Volunteers may get the opportunity to take charge and teach a number of sports, including football, volleyball and netball, establishing teams and developing relationships with the children, building confidence and team spirit. You are encouraged to be as interactive and engaging as possible; helping to organise local matches between teams, set up tournaments, or even start up your own sports club to introduce something new to the community. Your typical work day will begin with teaching and end with sports coaching, although a degree of flexibility is required as there may be some days when you focus only on one aspect of the project. This project requires a certain amount of initiative, but with amazing rewards.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?
You will be collected from Entebbe airport by one of the friendly local representatives and transferred to your project location - a small village south west of Kampala, on the shores of Lake Victoria. Daily transport costs and return to the airport will need to be paid locally and volunteers will need to budget for around $150 per four weeks to cover the costs of transportation to and from the project sites.
WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?
You will either be staying in a cosy, clean, carefully chosen homestay, where you will be a member of the family and your hosts will work hard to make you feel as such, or you will stay in a local volunteer house depending upon availability and volunteer numbers at the time of your visit. It will be basic, but comfortable, giving you the opportunity to experience Uganda like a local! You'll soon learn to live without the luxuries of Western society and find there are more important things in life!
WHAT WILL I BE EATING?
The food you will be provided with will consist of delicious local dishes, using fresh produce to create a cultural and tasty experience! Typically your diet will consist of beans, rice or noodles, with vegetables such as cabbage, avocado, spinach and eggplant. Meat dishes such as chicken, beef or goat are eaten a couple of times a week, but there will be no shortage of carbs- white bread, potatoes, pasta, matoke and cassava! Look out for the national drink, wagari, which is a type of gin made out of bananas.
