Mozambique – the word evokes images of pristine coastline, beautiful terracotta tiled towns and fascinating Arab influenced culture. However there is much more to this unique country than being simply an idyllic holiday location. As well as boasting a cultural heritage that is an unusual amalgamation of Portuguese, Asian and indigenous origins and traditions, Mozambique provides a home for a plethora of exotic wildlife. It also provides the perfect backdrop for this exciting project, which is perfect for anyone with an interest or passion for horses and horse riding. WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

This project is ideal for anyone with an interest in horses, whether they have a lot of experience, or have never ridden before but who would like to give it a go. Build on whatever level of expertise you may have in the stunning surroundings, whilst you make new friends and embrace the healthy lifestyle and spectacular locality. Mozambique provides the perfect choice for anyone who wishes to travel to somewhere that is lesser known but a real hidden gem – with an irresistible combination of superb coastline, bountiful wildlife, and tempting towns, it is a place that is sure to capture your heart and stay with you forever!

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

A typical day starts early – particularly if you are on the feeding rota. Enjoy the beginning of another beautiful Mozambique day as you do the rounds of the yard with your new friends. Breakfast will be served which you will all enjoy together, and then work starts for the day, with a combination of helping with riding lessons, general horse care, helping treat any of the horses that may be sick or injured, and overall yard maintenance, depending on your experience. After a hearty lunch at 12.30, you can enjoy a full afternoon of riding instruction or simply ride out in the picturesque rural setting that the ranch is situated in. Your evenings are completely free to enjoy as you wish.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

You will be met at the Vilanculos airport by friendly local staff, who will accompany you to the project site by bus.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

Throughout your project you will be staying in our small volunteer house based within a resort, which has a swimming pool, restaurant and bar. The accommodation is within easy walking distance of the stables and short ride from the town centre. Vilanculos itself offerseasy access to internet cafes, ATMs, supermarket, restaurants, bars and markets.  You will also be provided with a laundry service.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

You will be provided with three meals a day throughout your project. Your diet will consist of a variety of nutritious and delicious local and western dishes. Mozambique food is a fascinating fusion of flavours and elements, combining European and African influences. Some delicious dishes to look out for include; sopa de feijao verde, which is string bean soup, matata which is clam and peanut stew, and dishes cooked with piri piri sauce – watch out, this means spicy!

ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Mozambique has an incredible array of activities to occupy visitors, many centring on aquatic sports. All of these can be booked with local providers. Try sea kayaking, sailing, a trip in a traditional dhow, snorkelling through the sparkling waters above teeming reefs, scuba diving, and even deep sea fishing! Try Tofo beach and Barra beach for other land-based activities such as horse riding, and for sightings of such creatures as the magnificent whale shark, the unusual dugong, and even the eerie manta rays that glide through the glittering waters. For those with an interest in local arts and crafts, travel into nearby towns to sample the wares at the colourful markets, and maybe even take home a handcrafted souvenir. Otherwise there is a tennis court on site which you are welcome to utilise, and the town is only a short bus ride away if you want to explore the nightlife.

Flights

Flights are not included in our project costs. However, Frontier have partnered with an experienced and professional team of travel experts to help our volunteers find the best flight deals for their trips with Frontier. This travel specialist operates in the tailor-made, long haul multi-stop travel market, arranging complex airfares and transfers for independent travellers. They provide expertise, security and a vast product range along with a Travel Butler service which is a single point of contact and support whilst you are overseas.

We recommend that you obtain a quote using the following contact details rather than book online, as our partner will offer you the most competitive fares. To receive your quote or to seek any advice for your flights, please contact Frontier’s dedicated team of travel experts on 0800 082 9994 (or +44 800 082 9994 outside the UK) or email frontier@flightcentre.co.uk .

Visas

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

Insurance

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.
