You and an elite group of adventurers will trek across some of the worlds most remote, wild, and spectacular rainforest regions on an extraordinary, challenging and uniquely rewarding journey into the heart of Sumatra.
Under the guidance of our field experts you'll learn how to lead your own expedition, including camp-craft, navigation, leadership, route planning, provision logistics and expedition safety. Along the way, you'll encounter dramatic landscapes, enigmatic wildlife and secluded and sheltered human settlements.
Sumatra provides the perfect back drop for your adventure, with hectares of pristine rainforest bisected by seductive and mysterious trails where tapir and wild pig screech and crash through the dappled under-storey and spectacular forest birds descend from the massive rainforest canopy. WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?
Indonesia is the site for an absolutely vast store of biodiversity which makes up a significant proportion of the precious rainforest reserve left in the world. Within the forest a complex network of ecosystems support a huge number of species which exist in a delicate balance. However, it is also arguably subject to the highest levels of deforestation, partially due to the introduction of biofuels as an alternative to fossil fuels, which has in fact simply led to the continuation of further habitat destruction, threatening thousands of species and removing the protection that the forest provides for the planet.
Expedition projects such as these are vital as they support the introduction and growth of high quality, sustainable ecotourism – a type of tourism that aims to sustain conservation efforts whilst benefiting and aiding local communities, providing long term and effective strategies for preserving the natural environment. If any long term solutions are to be reached, organisations that are promoting ecotourism in vulnerable areas must be maintained.
This project is an incredible chance to enjoy a life changing experience in a stunning environment where you will learn valuable skills, whilst also supporting responsible and ethical tourism that has a very important role in protecting this undeniably invaluable natural resource.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?
Your project staff will meet you at Medan airport in Sumatra and escort you to your field base. After a short period of acclimatisation, adjustment and orientation your adventure will commence. From now on you will be on the move every day following a challenging and physically demanding schedule that will see you trek up to 10 km before nightfall. En route you will receive extensive training in expedition management and jungle survival skills from our expert field guides and project leaders.
WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?
You'll be camping in tents that you carry (along with anything else you need) on your back! You and your fellow explorers will set up camp each night in a place that you select having completed standard risk assessments to ensure that it's safe, secure and suitably close to a water source and, if possible, with the best possible views!
After you set up your tents, it's time to build a fire and get down to cooking your dinner of beans, rice, and vegetables, and whatever else you've managed to procure on the days journey from villages and settlements that you have passed. You'll be astonished at how amazing food tastes when it's cooked in the open over a campfire after a long hard trek, especially with the splendour of the evening sun setting behind the rainforest canopy.
