Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live amongst an indigenous forest community, in one of the most spectacular locations on earth? To wake up to the sight of a delicate mist hanging between towering rainforest trees, interlaced with creepers and vines, with the sound of the whistling thrush drifting through the canopy? Combine four incredible weeks of community and teaching work with an intense and exhilarating trek where you will benefit from the expert knowledge of your local guides, perfecting jungle survival skills and spotting a wealth of enigmatic wildlife. Sumatra's forests are overflowing with fascinating creatures including species as diverse as sun bears, elephants and the tallest individual flower in the world. Live amongst a north Sumatran community, teaching English, and experience the magic of various Sumatran cultures common to this area and discover how these people exist in harmony with their natural surroundings with an unforgettable guided trek.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

You will live and work at the heart of the village community, forming strong bonds with your hosts as you learn more about their way of life and ancient traditions. You will teach the younger members of the community who will be fascinated to learn from someone who comes from a hugely different culture. You can bring a teaching experience that is unique to you, by basing your lessons around your own particular skills and knowledge.

As well as teaching English you can run basic sports coaching and environmental education lessons, as well as encouraging them to be creative – try an arts and crafts session or a put on a play!

Once this phase of the project is over, you will head into the jungle equipped with a new sense of how the people of the region survive so successfully within the untamed rainforest environment. Led by your expert local guides, the trek will take you along little known jungle paths dripping with exotic creepers, strange and delicate flowers, and a plenitude of unusual insects, birds and mammals. Along the way you will be taught survival skills that have been honed and perfected over thousands of years to enable a safe and successful passage through the unforgiving forest – including collecting and processing medicinal plants!

This project is an unmissable chance to learn from those who live in harmony with their natural home – whilst giving something back in the form of invaluable community work.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

You will be collected from Medan airport and escorted to your project location and briefed on the days ahead.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

For the community phase of the project, you will either have the privilege and fun of living with a local family who will provide you with an insight into the culture in this secluded part of Indonesia or we will accommodate you in a local guesthouse. While on the adventure trek, you will be living an authentic jungle experience sleeping under tarpaulins; after a strenuous and rewarding day in the rainforest you will drift off to sleep lulled by the night sounds of the jungle and awake, refreshed, to a symphony of exotic bird calls.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

Basic, filling meals of rice and vegetables for most days. When out of the rainforest you can try and sample other Indonesian delicacies cooked with coconut milk, served alongside noodle soups and tantalising chicken. When living with the family as you complete your teaching assignment, you will enjoy home-cooked food made from locally sourced and fresh ingredients, providing you with the chance to sample the delicious local specialities. You will also be provided with family food if you stay in a local guesthouse.

Visas

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

Insurance

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to £2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to £1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.
