General Information | Location & Weather
Location
Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, is an island situated south and slightly east of the southernmost point of India, separated from that country by the 23km Palk strait. Sri Lanka itself contains 870 sq km of inland water. The total coastline is 1340km, and fringes the Indian Ocean. The capital city Colombo is situated on the south west coast.
The research sites are situated all over the island, and have been selected for their location suitability, their use as nesting sites by turtles, and their biodiversity.
Weather
Sri Lanka has a tropical climate with high humidity, tempered by sea breezes on the coast. The average temperature is about 27°C. January is the coolest month, becoming especially cold in the highlands, and May is the hottest time of year. Monsoon season is between May and July, and December and January. It is important to wear long, light clothing, preferably natural fibres, to protect yourself from mosquitoes. When working directly in the sun it is a good idea to wear a hat.
Please note that in the tropics the weather can be unpredictable and can affect the work programme. We suggest that you check various sources if you have particular requirements for the weather when you are on a Frontier project.
