Volunteer in Peru in your gap year, year out or career break

Nestled in the Peruvian Andes, in a mountain village that has been isolated from the world for thousands of years, you'll fight global warming and foster community development by building eco-friendly stoves, planting trees, and working with orphans. Forest hikes and lessons in traditional hand weaving will add magic to your experience, and exploring the country's mystical and enchanting peaks and some of the world's most awe-inspiring sights. Project Details

Many people who enjoy travelling have been drawn to Peru and its fascinating culture and traditionsTransportation
You’ll fly into Cajamarca via Lima, where you’ll be met by a friendly Frontier representative. From there, you’ll deploy to your village, where you can sample Peruvian cuisine, and take in the sights and sounds of a colourful settlement and welcoming hosts. Afterwards, you’ll move on to your rural project located an hour from Chota.

Accommodation
You’ll stay in a simple, clean homestay with a local host that has been chosen carefully. You’ll be a member of the family, and your hosts will work hard to make you feel as such.

Food
You’ll eat with your host in the family kitchen. Your meals will be a delicious variety of local food and with luck your hosts will be happy to teach you how to cook traditional Peruvian food!

Work
Once settled, you will begin your month by visiting farming families, for whom you will construct specially designed stoves that burn healthier, cleaner, and more efficiently. The second phase involves planting 200 trees over the course of a week, necessary work to help reduce the impact of the world's carbon emissions, and to conserve the abundant biodiversity. Heading to the city of Cajamarca, you will spend the last 2 weeks working in an orphanage, helping to educate and care for them and protect them against the difficulties they face each day.

This is a
Frontier Supported Project

Extras
A wide and inspiring range of exciting adventure and cultural activities like visits to remote villages, mountain treks, and river rafting expeditions are available in Peru and while you are there you must visit Machu Picchu. Please discuss adventure options with your host family and project staff, booking these in-country helps to support the local economy.

Project aims

Community work in Peru is beneficial to the local communities and may give you an insight into this kind of work and whether you may be interested in a career int his field

Building to Save Lives
The World Health Organisation recently reported that smoke from indoor cooking fires is the fourth greatest cause of death in developing countries, particularly amongst children. This is especially true in the remote villages of the Peruvian Andes, where poor infrastructure and an underdeveloped economy have left millions without clean cooking facilities.

The efficient stoves that we are building will help reduce these deaths as well as help fight global warming, and we’re also working to support community development by working with orphans. Added to this we are fighting the effects of deforestation and the environmental costs that this has by actively involving all of our volunteers in reforestation schemes.

Frontier supported projects and Frontier group projects are run in partnership with in-country NGOs, small community based organisations, local research institutes, academic organisations and conservation agencies.  Project descriptions and information are supplied directly by our partners or field staff and are accurate at time of publishing.

We aim to keep information up to date and accurate, however, the nature of our projects and in particular the fact that they are constantly evolving and developing in response to changing needs means that project activities, travel schedules, tour itineraries and daily timetables can change overnight and without notice.
