Teaching English as a Foreign Language

TEFL Training

Open up a world of opportunity with an intensive TEFL course (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) with Frontier. These face to face courses are run by TEFL trained advisors with experience of community work and teaching children overseas and have been designed for anyone who would like to develop their natural ability to teach others in a fun, interesting and stress-free environment. Our intensive day course is structured to provide candidates with the basic skills to teach conversational English without any prior experience or a degree standard education. It is the first step to take in beginning your authentic cultural adventure if you are looking for a gap year experience, a career break or even a career change!

The objectives of the course are to give you groundwork in Teaching English as a Foreign Language and enable you to walk into your first class as a prepared and confident teacher. Your qualification will provide you with the basic teaching skills, background knowledge and awareness that will subsequently enable you to develop and fine tune what you do in classroom. The day isn’t intended to apply in all teaching contexts or cover all aspects of teaching but simply to raise awareness and of course to have some fun! You’ll arrive Saturday morning at the London HQ in Shoreditch and have a little time to sit down and relax with a hot drink before your training starts. You’ll be thrown into the deep end straight away with lots of games to help you get to know your fellow trainee teachers. All day you will cover a range of different topics to aid your time in the field.

Teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL), like any other teaching job, is about conveying information to students in an informative and interesting manner. This course is activity based, this means you learn the underlying principles of TEFL by taking part and doing it.  All the activities you do on the day you could be using with your own students wherever you teach in the world.

The Frontier TEFL day will include the following and more:
An introduction to teaching language in the classroom
An introduction to grammar
Getting meaning across
Practising pronunciation
Maintaining student involvement
Techniques for teaching vocabulary
Using games in TEFL
Practicing board work
Language skills
Error correction: A discussion of approaches and methods
Introduction to planning lessons
Teaching practice and feedback

You’ll be given the Frontier TEFL course book, lots of ideas for lesson plans and a comprehensive catalogue of games to play with the children you teach!

On your teaching experience you may have the incredible opportunity to live with a local family in the community you are teaching in. Frontier teachers have a complete cultural experience; you will live with a local family, eat the food they eat, shop with them at the local market and travel on the same chicken buses. You will be be welcomed not only as a friend but a true member of the community. You will have a unique travel experience and come home knowing that you have made a real and lasting difference to the lives and futures of the children you have taught along the way. This may be the start of a new career for you!

Once you have returned from your teaching placement simply fill in the lesson plan log book and submit to the London HQ for your well earned TEFL Certificate. From this point you have a world of opportunities available to you: you have access to career and educational opportunities that would have been out of your reach without the English training that our TEFL graduates receive.
