Wildlife Conservation
With worldwide habitat loss, human encroachment, illegal activities such as poaching, and many other factors contributing to the decline of many significant species, committed and well managed conservation efforts are becoming increasingly important for the survival of many of the most recognisable species on the planet.
What to do in wildlife conservation
With the range of habitats and species under threat around the world, wildlife conservation efforts can take any number of forms. You are sure to be able to find the type of project work that will be perfect for you, based on your interests, experience and ambition, whether you want to simply make your contribution or take your first steps towards your dream career.
For those who are practical minded and enjoy working outdoors, a game reserve or national park could be the ultimate destination, giving you the chance to work on maintenance projects, habitat restoration, monitoring and tracking work in an open environment.
If you see yourself in a more hands on role, working directly with orphaned or rescued animals in their day to day care and upkeep, a rescue centre or sanctuary could be the choice for you.
Where to go for your wildlife conservation project
On almost every continent you will find projects working towards the conservation of local and sometimes endemic wildlife, so if wildlife conservation is your passion and a particular part of the world has always held a fascination for you, you won’t be disappointed.
For many people the most magnificent wildlife in the world can be found in Africa, where game reserves and national parks, sanctuaries and refuges all combine to offer you the chance to work in the back garden of the Big Five!
Famous the world over for the wildlife that is found there, and infamous the world over for the rate of its destruction, the Amazon Rainforest is one of the most unique ecosystems on the planet. Travel to the Americas and work on a range of projects in any one of the rainforests that so characterise the region.
Well known for its ancient and mystical communities as much as for its unique and elusive wildlife, a project in Asia could be your opportunity to enjoy a broad and enriching experience whilst making a valuable contribution to ongoing wildlife conservation projects in this part of the world.
Wildlife conservation need not even be limited to terrestrial projects and one of the most biodiverse and equally threatened ecosystems on the planet is the coral reef. With marine conservation projects in Africa, Asia and Australasia and the South Pacific, this could be an opportunity you do not want to miss.
