Teaching Abroad
Whether you are interested in teaching as a career or would simply prefer to combine travelling with the opportunity to make a contribution to the education and therefore lives of the communities that you visit, a placement teaching abroad could be the perfect choice for you.
What to do when you’re teaching abroad
One of the most appealing aspects of volunteer teaching placements is that not only will you have the opportunity but you will actually be encouraged to incorporate your own skills, experiences and interests into your teaching programme, whether arts and crafts, music, drama or indeed anything else.
Depending on your motivations and relevant experience, you could be teaching a range of ages and abilities, from kindergarten to adults, and from complete beginners to those with a better grasp of language but who might benefit from working with a native speaker.
Your role will be specific and relevant to you, will certainly be varied, and could even involve being a mentor and a friend to your students. You could find yourself working as a teaching assistant or leading a class independently, or indeed anything in between.
Where to go when you’re teaching abroad
The destination where you undertake your teaching placement will depend entirely on you. It may be that there is a country that you’ve always dreamed of visiting or a culture that has always intrigued and fascinated you, and one of the benefits of teaching abroad is that it will give you a wonderful opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the community who will inevitably welcome you with warmth and open arms.
You could travel to the Americas to explore the lands of the Mayans and the Incas, famous for their ancient civilisations retained in the architectural wonders that continue to fascinate and humble all that behold them.
If the tribal customs and mystery of Africa have always held a special appeal to you, then one of the teaching placements available almost throughout this vast continent could be just the experience you are searching for.
A journey to Asia could reveal intriguing cultures and communities steeped in mystery and wonder, that your teaching placement will give you the unique opportunity to understand and appreciate in a way that few visitors and privileged enough to enjoy.
One of the far flung islands of Australasia and the South Pacific could be your dream destination, where traditional customs are maintained every day and your teaching experience will open you up to a way of life you didn’t even think could still exist.
