Medical Volunteering Abroad
Medical volunteering can give you the edge in the notoriously competitive field of medicine. This experience can take a number of forms but an increasingly popular option is overseas medical volunteering, whether a shorter term placement or a longer term internship or elective format. An appreciation and understanding of the challenges facing the medical industry in developing countries is a key attribute of a successful medic, whilst the contribution to a community that you will be able to make through a hard working placement will be significant.
What forms can your medical volunteering take?
Your medical placement and the work you could be involved in will depend on your personal preferences but also closely on any specialist skills or specific experience you may have.
The possibilities for work activities on a medical volunteering project are wide ranging and could include such programmes as health awareness raising and workshops, medical administration and clerical work, outreach work, or shadowing and working closely with doctors and nurses.
With so many different possible options available to you, including both wide ranging and specific work programmes and projects for those with limited experience as well as those with a significant amount of medical background, you are sure to be able to find the ideal project placement on which you will enjoy and acquire your intended skills and experience.
Where can your medical volunteering take place?
You could be based in a number of different project locations including schools and orphanages, community outposts, medical clinics or hospitals, and in any number of different departments.
Travel to the bustling and vibrant cities of the Americas where music and colour come to life in juxtaposition to the unseen and deprived parts of the region where medical outreach and health awareness projects represent an invaluable resource to the local communities.
Your medical volunteering project in Africa will reach deep into the heart of the community, where your project work will be most effective and impacting and make a lasting contribution to the welfare of the neediest parts of the community.
A medical internship or work placement in Asia or Australasia and the South Pacific could be a strong addition to your CV and work experience, giving you the opportunity to not just make provisions for the community in which you are placed but also take positive steps towards the fulfilment of your intended career.
